Heating Oil in Scotland
Scotland features beautiful isolation, rugged terrain and internationally recognised landmarks such as Loch Ness and Aviemore. Scotland has exposure to cold northern winds from the North Sea and the Arctic and highly variable weather – with skiing available throughout the winter in many parts of the Highlands. The cold and wet weather is a small price to pay for these beautiful surroundings. Despite this, paying less for your heating during cold spells is of primary importance, and doing so requires a little insider knowledge about the availability of heating oil in the country.
North Sea Oil:
Scotland decided against leaving the UK in a referendum held during September 2014. The future of North Sea oil and gas were a major campaign battleground during the run up to the Scottish Independence referendum. North Sea operations began in 1975 and although oil and gas are now tougher to extract, the reserves are substantial - between 15 billion and 24 billion barrels of oil equivalent - meaning possibly another 30 to 40 years of production. And there could be new discoveries such as the fields west of Shetland. The concern for North Sea Oil during the end of 2014 and early 2015, is that with oil prices around $50-60 per barrel, extraction becomes unsustainable. It will be interesting to see how the industry reacts to current prices.

Did you know: the pence per litre rate will drop significantly the more you order. This is particularly relevant in the Highlands and West of Scotland where deliveries can be particularly remote and inaccessible, meaning that the variable costs per order are much higher. We advise staying within your budget but checking the price for 1,000 litres up as the unit cost will be much lower.
